There are currently two types of breast implants:
Saline: Saline breast implants are silicone shells filled with a sterile saline solution. They are normally less expensive than silicone implants and have a lower rate of revision surgery. Saline breast implants tend to look rounder, be stiffer, and weigh more than their silicone counterparts.
Silicone: Silicone-filled breast implants are silicone shells filled with a plastic gel made of silicone. These tend to feel more soft and natural but typically cost more. Also, surgery with silicone implants usually leaves a bigger scar.
Both saline and silicone implants are FDA approved. Speak with your doctor about which route you should take during your consultation.
Breast implants surgery is usually done as an outpatient procedure, under general anesthesia, during which you will be pain-free. The procedure usually takes a couple hours. The surgical incision is usually done under the breasts or around your nipples, depending on the patient's preference, the shape of the breast, the type of implant, and how much enlargement is being done.
